Did you know…

22 Jun

At the museum I’ve been doing research so that I can write some signs for some of the exhibits.  In the course of my research I have come across some interesting and strange things.

I’m going to share some of what I’ve learned.

Did you know?

Sneakers got their name because they were quiet when you walk so you would “sneak” up on people.

Someone built a hamburger bed.  Well it’s a cheeseburger, but the fact still stands, someone made a BED to resemble a BURGER.

Looks...cozy?

Also, along the theme of beds, there is a blog dedicated entirely to discussing them.  It’s this old guy who knows a lot about beds I guess and wants to share.  It’s called www.oldbedguy.com.

In the United States, during the Victorian Era I believe, in some states hatpins were outlawed because it was thought that they could be used as deadly weapons.  So their length was limited and it was made into law.

Oh and there is such a thing as a hatpinologist.  This is either, someone who studies hatpins or collects them, I don’t remember, but I came across the word.

There is a museum dedicated to like anything you can think of.  I’ve come across the Cyber Toaster Museum, which is dedicated entirely to toasters.  I’ve also discovered the Museum of Menstruation, which is kind of gross, but ok whatever.

Finally, just a thought.  What is up with inventors naming things after themselves?  How boring is that?  Kind of narcissistic too, actually.  But I think that if I were to invent something, I would try to give it a more interesting and unique name, like…

Damn, I’m drawing a blank…guess the invention has to come before the name and since I can’t think of anything to invent I guess I’ll have to leave it for now.

I don’t think hunger is something you want to inspire when designing a bed…I’d go more for inspiring sleepiness or comfort, but not hunger…sleep and hunger just don’t go together
